FEBRUARY 12 In Dayton, Ohio, the Wright brothers begin running their new four-cylinder engine, although it breaks down during testing.

MARCH 23 The Wright brothers file a patent with the U. S. Patent Office, based on their successful Model 1902 glider.

AUGUST 8 On the Potomac River, Washington, D. C., Samuel P. Langley, curator of the Smithsonian Institution, successfully launches a quarter-scale model of his Aerodrome A from an anchored houseboat.

December 17 At Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the world’s first powered flight transpires when a heavier-than-air craft piloted by Orville Wright flies 120 feet during a 12-second sojourn. His brother, Wilbur Wright, then takes the
