Reuters told about the Russian fighters on air base in Latakia

In airfield near Latakia some Russian fighters are placed, report Reuters referring to some sources. According to agency, it is the first case of detection of the Russian fighting aircraft in this country.

According to one of Reuters agency sources, in airfield near Latakia four Russian fighters are placed. One more American official to whom journalists talked, confirmed the fact of detection of planes, however could not call their exact quantity.

The American officials have no information when cars arrived on air base and as they are used in Syria.

Earlier sources of agency reported that the American investigation found in airfield in Syria some Russian helicopters. Where exactly there is this airfield, interlocutors of Reuters did not specify,

On September 16 the General Staff of Armed forces of Russia declared that Moscow yet does not plan to create military and air base in Syria. The first deputy chief of department Nikolay Bogdanovsky, however, noted that «everyone can be».

At the beginning of September the subject of building by Russia military presence at Syria began to be discussed widely. A row of mass media reported about plans of Moscow to construct military base at the airport of Latakia. The point of material support Soviet, and then and the Russian Navy exists there since 1971. In the Pentagon argued that it is a question of creation of «base of the advanced expansion». Such bases usually use for support of tactical operations.

Sources of the western editions within the last weeks repeatedly reported about a transfer to Syria of the Russian arms. The Wall Street Journal reported about arrival on base in Latakia the Russian passenger and cargo planes, Reuters agency – about arrival of two Russian landing ships and deliveries in the country of the antiaircraft Pantsir-C1 gun missile systems.

On September 18 the Minister of Defence of Russia Sergey Shoygu carried on telephone negotiations with the head of the Pentagon Asheton Carter. Heads of military of departments discussed a situation in Syria and agreed about further contacts to the purpose of a resolution of conflict in Syria and fight against the terrorist organization «Islamic state» which activity in the territory of Russia is officially forbidden.
